Kayak Trip to Brandywine
Light
September 10, 2000
On a clear night, when
I lie in bed I can see a red light blinking out over the Bay. This warning
beacon is from Brandywine
Light which warns mariners of the nearby Brandywine Shoal. I have fished
in the area several times and it had been one of my goals to kayak to the
lighthouse. Joe Link and I paddled our kayaks from Cox Hall Creek to Brandywine
Light this morning. We launched at 7:00 AM in the fog with a calm Bay and
bright sunshine. We left just about as high tide occurred, so we kept a
constant compass bearing of 290 degrees to allow for some southward movement
with the current due to the ebbing tide. The Bay remained calm, but visibility
was reduced to about 2 miles as we neared the lighthouse at 8:45 AM. We
paddled into the small "harbor" on the Delaware side of the artificial
island surrounding the lighthouse. We tied the kayaks and stretched
and drank Gatorade up on the catwalk dock. On the way back we maintained
a bearing of 90 degrees. At about 2 miles from land we each paddled a
line-of-sight course for our respective home beaches. At this point, the
southerly current was rushing into our bows, so we each had a challenging
paddle the rest of the way. I landed at 11:50 AM. The left picture below
shows Joe in his kayak near the lighthouse. That's me in the center picture.
The picture on the right is the lighthouse from up on the catwalk.
